TONKÜHLER

TONKÜHLER (clay cooler) is a cool box that uses no electricity, and which exploits the evaporation principle to keep fruit and vegetables cool at high temperatures. Two smaller clay boxes are inserted into a larger one, and the interspace filled with waterlogged sand. The water becomes diffused through the external wall and evaporates, cooling the interior wall. The principle of the so-called 'pot-in-pot' or 'fridge for the poor' has been used in parts of Africa since the 1990s, where it has contributed significantly to enhanced food security.

"The Architectural Models Network sets out to bring together all those interested in the history, current practice and future of architectural model-making. Its intention is to share knowledge, to take stock of the current state of the field, and to identify productive areas for future practice and research."

This video is a summary of the network's first workshop taking place in London in May 2018.
